Becoming an American citizen, emigrating from Brazil, gave me a strong sense of empowerment through my fluency in both the Portuguese and English language. Although my background is primarily settled in the Portuguese language, I grew up with a deep love of learning that culminated into a desire to learn English. Despite poverty, inadequate resources, and indifferent support; I excelled in my studies. Learning English widened my horizons by introducing a whole new academic canon, a new culture, and helping me to realize my professional goal of working toward becoming a teacher.
My interest in pursuing a career in education emerged from the commentaries of classmates, and from dedicated professors. These academics noted my success in the areas of public speaking and communication; two fundamental skills needed, in order to become a successful teacher. While working on my MAT Initial Licensure in Portuguese, I was surprised to hear a professor saying that students, after the age of twenty, are unable to learn a foreign language. I had a different story to tell. I started to learn English as a second language when I was twenty-seven-year-old. Having no preconceived notions regarding a student’s ability to learn, gave me a unique outlook on education. I will encourage my students to learn a foreign language, because I now know it is possible to do so despite the challenges.
Just as learning a second language has motivated me throughout my life, my beliefs regarding opportunities in education have been equally as empowering. I believe that an education gives every student the opportunity to learn, to change, and to grow. Education provides benefits beyond the obvious abilities in language, science, or history. It can encourage creativity and decision-making. It can help teach sensitivity to others, and it can also expand a child’s horizons through multicultural awareness. My lifelong passion for learning, my core virtues, and my beliefs have led me to pursue a career in the field of education.

My research interests and expertise lie in the general areas of theoretical and applied linguistics, Romance linguistics, and more specifically in the areas of second language acquisition, bilingualism, contrastive linguistics, and psycholinguistics.
With the advent of globalization, the improvement of telecommunications and mass immigration, bilingualism and multilingualism have become more widespread than ever before. This has given rise to linguistic, social and cultural challenges for society, education and healthcare. As a result, it has become a hot topic in a number of disciplines across the social sciences and the arts and humanities, and thus has the potential of becoming an area of strategic academic importance in the UK, as it already is in the US and Canada.
With this in mind, my research program concerns the interaction between the knowledge of two languages in the bilingual mind, which results in differential language development in bilinguals compared to monolinguals, and language transfer in second language learners. I am interested in the relative contributions of linguistic vs. environmental factors (e.g. socio-economic status, context of exposure to the two languages, etc.) to cross-linguistic influence, which is a subject of debate within the current language acquisition literature. I am focusing on the acquisition of grammatical phenomena that differ crucially for Spanish and English, and that involve connections between different components of language.

When I was growing up, I did not like going to English classes at all. They were boring, focused on memorising grammar rules and a vigorous preparation for exams. I could not see myself as an English teacher and I could not imagine that this was a career that I would like to pursue. That is, I think, my strongest asset. I have personal experiences as an English student something that makes me a better teacher.
My teaching methods combine two different aspects. A strong academic background and work experience. When it comes to the academic aspect, I have both a bachelor's and master's degree in English Language and teaching and I was exposed to courses on second language acquisition, testing, classroom management, materials development and teaching methodology. I also have a CELTA diploma where I could be evaluated on my teaching skills and become better in action. As far as my work experience, I have taught in 3 countries (Greece, UK and Spain) where the expectations from an English lesson and teacher were completely different. So, I learnt to adapt my existing knowledge and skills in order to plan lessons that were both suitable and effective.
